CONFESSIONS OF A HAPPY PASTOR

How do you really feel after Mother’s Day? Come on, tell the truth. Yesterday I read several blogs of pastors who do something very unusual; that’s to tell the full truth.

I’m not calling pastors liars, or leaders liars. But what I am saying is that sometimes it’s really hard to be honest. For example, Mother’s Day is a big day. For some, it’s a really big day. For others, it’s actually a down day. A lot of it has to do with two factors: the age of your church, and how long you’ve been going. Both of those factors determine whether this is a big day, but that’s a discussion for another time. Let’s get back to what we’re talking about.

It’s really tough to not hang our worth, significance, and effectiveness on the attendance, especially on a big day. How did we do? Are there more people? Then we’re up. If there are not, then we’re down.

Here is the truth, fellow leader. Your effectiveness isn’t judged on one day, two days, one month, or one year. It’s over time.

Are you enjoying yourself? Are you having any fun? Because if not, if neither are true, then you’re not growing. If you’re not growing your church isn’t growing. I know there are exceptions to that, but usually not many.

So here is my advice to my fellow leaders across America this morning. Get up, suit up, show up, do the next right thing. Ignore the numbers, at least on a weekly basis. You need a much broader scope to make a judgment and engage fully in what you know is the next right thing for you to do. That’s the cure for the Monday Morning Blues.
